Experience AR/VR/XR

last updated: Jun 30, 2025

The spatial computing revolution is upon us and with Apple’s release of the Apple Vision Pro in February of 2024, as Sherlock would say, the game is afoot!

NOTE: I’ll try to keep this page updated as the landscape evolves, but feel free to message me on LinkedIn if I’ve missed anything! Check out vr-compare.com for up to date specs on specific headsets.

Head Mounted Displays (HMDs)

The headset market is heating up and there have been leaps and bounds across all spatial computing head-mounted displays (HMDs).  This page includes a comparison of details such as price, weight, compatibility, quality and features. Devices that I’ve covered on this page:

  • Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest , HTC VIVE , HP Reverb/VR1000, Sony, Varjo, Magic Leap, XReal, Snap Spectacles, Microsoft Holo Lens

// Coming soon: ranking of HMDs by market share

Meta Quest Pro $999, Meta Quest 3 $499, Meta Quest 2 (no longer sold)

Meta Quest Family

All of Meta’s HMDs feature inside-out tracking (aka, no external devices / cameras required) and handheld controllers with haptic feedback, “hey meta” voice control, boundary / stationary mode and passthrough cameras for safety.

Starting at the top, the Meta Quest Pro is Meta’s high-end mixed-reality headset, features a lighter display and more robust features for enterprise spatial computing. The consumer model, Quest 3 features color passthrough as Meta enters the mixed-reality space.

HTC

Built for gamers, HTC has been in the VR market a lot longer, with about 11 devices since the release of the PC-tethered HTC Vive in 2016 for about $800. Since 2021, HTC has released standalone VR HMDs featuring inside-out tracking, and are at the pricier top end of the market. HTC has a number of devices: VIVE XR Elite, VIVE Flow, VIVE Focus, and the VIVE Pro Series.

The VIVE XR elite features

  • 10×10 playspace
  • stepless IPD adjustment with manual diopters
  • immersive audio
  • hot-swappable battery with 2 hours of life, counterweighted for balance with battery in the back
  • eye and full face tracker and up to 5 full body trackers (accessory)
  • multiple display desktop support for extended monitors
